| Former Marine and baseball great Ted Williams commemorated with U.S. postal stamp (21 Photos) Posted: 15 Sep 2011 08:03 PM PDT  Former Marine Ted Williams will be immortalized on a Forever stamp in July 2012 as part of our "Major League Baseball All Stars" commemorative Forever stamps set. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate. During World War II, while in the prime of his career, Williams enlisted in the Navy and began a flight-training program after the 1942 season. He earned his wings as a second lieutenant in the Marines and became a flight instructor. He missed three full seasons of baseball during the war. He would also miss most of two seasons in 1952 and 1953 while flying combat missions during the Korean War. Ted's daughter, Claudia Williams, expressed her excitement and gratitude saying, "I am incredibly proud and honored to have the U.S. Postal Service commemorate my father in such a beautiful and lasting way. Dad would be completely humbled to know he was chosen to represent the U.S. in this way. His love and commitment to this great country is well-known, having served in the US Marine Corps during two wars, and performing at the highest level playing America's pasttime. The artwork captures all the grace and determination of his best swing." Thanks Mark for sending this in. |
